I haven't looked but I believe that some of the whizzy new lenses require a contact not present on the K-5 family.

I'm feeling lazy right now, and the cameras are a fair bit away from where I sit,so I can't compare the lens mounts,  but if I remember I'll check to see if my belief is correct.

Pity they don't upgrade the firmware for the K5 family. I'm sure they could
easily work in some of the more recent features.
If they did that, why would people upgrade?

On a more serious note, even if it didn’t cost anything to make the changes to
the code, testing the updated software would cost a lot of money, and wouldn’t
sell them any more cameras. That’s money and labor out of their budget that
they could spend on bringing new products to market.
But people not spending the money on new bodies could then buy whizzy new
lenses, if they so chose....

Any idiot can shoot with a Canon, Nikon, or Sony, it takes a special kind of
idiot to use a Pentax.
