Thanks, Alan. I don't think "the blob" had been partially eaten; I think it began to decompose after I removed it and placed it in the sun to photograph it. It appears to have a few suckers or mouths on one end of the underside, while the upper surface is simply a gooey, globular mass. It looks a bit like a slug, or a snail out of its shell.
The caterpillar could well be that of a sphinx moth; we have plenty of the adults here in the summer, and I have no idea what their caterpillars look like.
