At that time, Asahi was making glass primarily for medical instruments, and
it was considered the best in that field.  It was said that Zeiss was still
recovering from the effects of WW II, and that Asahi was, in the opinion of
many at that time (1966) equal or better than Zeiss in photographic glass
as well.  The Asahi coatings were in particular said to make them superior
for photographic purposes.
