well sure makes sense it would be female wood duck .. but she does rather look like a little grebe.. , no? (now I can't find the photo on line that made me think that)

Now looking up the aconite brought back the name eranthis to me.. and it also looks like the yellow blossom in the photo (was it Paul?) someone else posted
in the last day or two and I was calling a buttercup.

anyway your within 50 feet is a lot more inspiring than my within 50 feet   and the beauty has to be some good comfort for you

Thanks Ann. Meg says the yellow flowers are Winter Aconite, I say the duck in
question is the female WoodDuck.

We are doing ok, we haven’t totally hibernated (and now we’ve both had the
vaccinations) but unfortunately I have not really been out and about with my
camera. All of the photos in the set here we’re taken within 50 feet of our
house. Living through the flood last May, being still in flood
restoration/rebuilding mode 10 months later, those are not good things. But on
balance we are grateful for the location of our house which gives us so much
opportunity to enjoy the natural surroundings.

what a nice set! beautiful flowers, adorable chubby squirrels and woodchuck.
and is that a pied-billed grebe floating behind the wood duck? I imagine you
had been wishing they were a lot closer.
I know I knew the yellow flowers at some point but comes up blank today.. love
droplets on blooms..

glad you are out and about getting some good stuff

Meanwhile, back to picture taking, here is a small selection from the last few
weeks.

For those not familiar with North American critters, the one big ugly rodent is
a Woodchuck aka Groundhog.
