We're pretty serious about SLES at work and at the time of the merger we
were on Red Hat (it was a lot cheaper for Red Hat support back then). I
went to an IBM/Novell dog and pony at the Benson in Portland right after
the ink dried on the Novell buy and they cashed that mondo IBM stock
check. It was interesting to see how many CNE types grilled the
presenters about closing the SuSE source, and other open projects, and
Novell (Mike Elerbe and the likes) swore that wouldn't happen. It turns
out they are true to their word on this one - whew. Anyway, when that
dust cloud settled our cost for support for SLES went down about 30%
from the old Red Hat cost and it dropped to about 25% of what
Mainline/SuSE wanted originally for support on SLES.
I also have evals of the new OES (Open Enterprise Server) and SLES9 -
along with a whole host of Novell product DVD's if anyone is interested.
