I finally got around to installing a beta Mandrake 10.2 for x86_64 on my new amd64. So, now my 120 GB HD has a dual boot of Win XP Pro and Mandrake 10.2.

During install, I got some error messages:

There was an error installing packages:

xlockmore-5.1-2mdk.x86_64

perl-DB-File-1-B10-2mdk.x86_64

otherwise, incident free.

I would be very enthusiastic about mdk, but for one problem.
When I had previously

installed the mainstream x86 version of official mdk 10.1 on my P4 computer, I encountered a jittery mouse situation where the mouse was jumping all over the place, re-arranging the desktop icons, and possibly worse. I did a Google search and found that others had similar complaints, but no one nailed down the problem. Someone blamed it on a cheap KVM; indeed, the KVM may be the problem, but when I bought mine 4+ years ago for $189 I did not think it was cheap.

For me, this is almost a show stopper. But, if I plug a mouse into the USB port, disconnect the KVM mouse from the ps/2 port; the mouse behaves as it should.

Being a bit pessimistic, I assume that the KVM mouse probem still exists. So, I used a USB mouse instead of the one connected to my KVM when I installed mdk 10.2 beta x86_64.

I am going to buy another HD before I try to install some other OSes; including Sun Open Solaris 10, SUSE Linux 9.2 eval, OpenBSD 3.6.

Some of these are new territory for me and I don't want to be overly concerned about what the MBR looks like with 3+ OSes installed.

Thanks again to everyone who has shared with me his success stories about amd64 OSes.

Rodney
