I really can't stress this project enough. ( as some of you guys may
know, i've done so in the past. They have a new release, but i haven't
tried it as i've been tied up with school. But thanx giving is coming up
so i'll have some free time then).
See if your linksys is supported, and use it. I've been using it for
years now and have no complaints. In this case, its the best of both
worlds. A linksys router (with it low power demands... i think 9 watts,
but don't quote me) and the configurability of linux as your OS,
firewall, ssh & all.
happy hacking,
b.

I'm not sure why you want to install a Linux Fire Wall between your
DSL modem and your Linksys router. In most situations the Linksys
router provides sufficient security by itself - especially when
combined with some local firewalling on the individual client
machines.
However, there are indeed times when a simple router such as the
Linksys won't do the job and either needs to be replaced or used
in combination with other devices to give a "security in depth"
type solution.
I have a Linux Firewall between my cable modem and my internal
routers, and I have installed configurations like this for
other people as well. I have generally used Astaro Linux and
Smoothwall Linux for this. Both of them are easy to setup and
run and do a good job. Of the two, I would recommend Smoothwall
for home users and small businesses and Astaro to larger organizations;
but it is a close call. You can't go wrong with either of them.

setting it as a firewall for my network, or is there a better solution?
