Mark,
        Are you sure? Our PADs also exports version 5 as default.
        When you actually set-up to export the ASCII file format, set a 
filename & click save, then you get the export options screen where you will 
have a drop down window to select the ASCII version, just as John mentioned. 
Seems John likes using version 3.0, I have had good luck with ASCII version 
3.5.

My PowerPCB is version 5.2, and the ascii files I export indicate they are 
version 5.0. I don't have any additional "save" and "export" options.
