There is a XML based open format for sch and pcb components. Have a look at http://www.autotraxeda.com/html/file_format.html. It should be easy to implement them as gerber or drill files, as well. This is something I believe should be the way to go in pcb design and it is something I always wanted. For component manufacturers to support every exisiting pcb design tool is unrealistic to expect. Support for a general, industry standard format should be achievable. If we show them there was a demand for it, they would probably do it.

Back to the original question, there is a SW company supplying Protel and Altium sch and pcb components and it was mentioned recently on this forum. Don't know exactly the name right now.

Igor

I think the thing to ask for is not that all component vendors provide
libraries in all possible formats; the thing that we really should ask for
is one common format for parts libraries.

The ECAD applications don't have to actually work with this format, but
they should have import/export facilities. This can't be too hard. Such a
common import/export format could be very simple (XML or so), without any
concerns for storage efficiency or speed. The only thing required is that
every information any vendor needs to create their own
symbols/footprints/models is in there, and that all ECAD vendors have
import/export functions.

IMO such a common format would boost the availability of vendor-supplied
parts libraries quite a bit. If the ECAD vendors can't get together on
that, it might be enough if the component vendors do so... :)
