I was able to delete the offending item by selecting all and deselecting the visible components and then deleting the item.
I still however get new components placed in the (40000, 47000) region which is in outer space. I believe I have a PCB component that has gone way off the map. If I 'Show Entire Document' it looks fine (3"X4" PCB). If I place a new component with 'Update PCB.' then it is placed way and far up and to the right of (0, 0). If I 'Select All' and drag then the outline box indicates something way far down and left of (0, 0). If I do a 'Print/Preview.' then it creates over 35 pages.
