Graham,
When you did your copy, you should have used the Paste Special command
and checked the Duplicate Designator box. This would allow designators to be
duplicated and not add the _1 or _2 extension to the designators.

Now that you are where your are, my only suggestion would be can you do
the global edit using (_1= )? Note the blank space after the equal sign. Or
alternatively _2 or _3 as the need requires? You would also need to set "*_1"
in the attributes to match by designator field. It worked for me in a simple
test.

Subject: [PEDA] Designator Text Subsititution in 99se sp6

Hi

It would be wonderful if somebody could help with this one in 99se sp6.

Having placed a number of PCBs onto a single panel, designators of
the same value are appended with an underscore and a number to ensure
uniqueness. I would like to remove this appendage. The global text
substitution function {_*= } does not appear to work on the pcb (but
does on the schematic). Any clues? All the alternatives I can think
off are painful!
