I disagree in that Altium should ALWAYS remain consistent in what layers it
uses for the libraries it creates. Though anyone prudent and with 1/2 a
brain should really create their own, even if taking Altium's as a starting
point. There is so much necessary info that can and should be added to
geometries.

With the exception of Mechanical layer 1, Altium does not have any
particular assignment  for Mechnical layers.  You will find the library
parts are made by different designers at Altium so the conventions may
not always be the same across all libs.
