I've been writing a paper with a tight
deadline and haven't had time to write longer emails.  And this subject
gets into too many issues to be discussed briefly.

For whatever reason, Peirce more commonly employed "mathematical
logic," "logic of mathematics," or "mathematics of
logic" for formal logic...

Brief comment:   CP has 119
instances of 'formal logic', and Peirce's usage is consistent with 21st c.
usage of that term.  That's a strong reason.  The other terms are less
common.  When I finish the article I'm writing, I'll post a note to
Peirce-L.
