This summer I read Istvan Meszaros' _Beyond Capital_ which contains lots of really good analytical stuff on the ex-USSR. I would commend this work to everyone on Pen-l because he puts forth the provocative thesis that Actually Existing Socialism should be considered part of the system of _capital_ which, he argues, pre-dates and post-dates _capitalism_.
