Tom Walker quoted Canadian stats showing a lowe rate of layoff in the 1990s
than earlier decades, but a lower rate of hiring. While this may be true
for the U.S., I suspect U.S. hiring was probably quicker than Canada's. The
Conference Board's "jobs hard to get" series is at a record low since its
beginning in 1978, and "jobs easy to find" at a record high. U.S. labor
should be in a strong bargaining position. Greenspan daren't tighten while
Asian markets are so panicked.
