1. Blair heard that Mumia had been freed. I don't know if he had been allowed out on bail (though I doubt it). But I do know that Geronimo Pratt was freed (though the DA is using taxpayer dollars to reprosecute). Pratt was a Black Panther leader who was framed as part of the US FBI's COINTELPRO (counterintelligence program). 2. Doug asks >>when did Britain become an economic model?<< right after Chile did. 3. Blair notes that >>trying to drive in San Francisco has become much more difficult, not to mention harrowing, since legislation was passed making it illegal to stop at stop signs or for red lights, or to use one's turn signals (the cops always set a good example regarding these new laws) << I am glad that those barbarians in Northern California are finally coming around to the Southern California mode of driving. ;-) In my classes, I use the example of the difference in N. vs. S. California driving styles as a way of explaining the importance of tradition. But capitalist progress seems to be destroying all tradition. From where am I going to get examples that are slightly close to the students' homes? in pen-l solidarity, Jim Devine [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Econ.
