the gov't may not know about stimulating long-term supply-side growth, but
they should.

I think the left (however defined) is going to lose if the problem is
defined totally in these terms.
Also, we shouldn't equate "political" with "redistributional." Capitalists
redistribute from each other and from workers all the time as part of the
normal _economic_ process.
