It has been a long time since I looked at the "sports" lit., but a while back several studies indicated that attracting a team was, at best, a wash. It cost the local economy as much in subsidies as in new $ created (total $, not just tax $). Since then the subsidies have gotten bigger, so I would suspect it is now a loss. The issue isn't "do the subsidies create some jobs,' but would subsidies put into different industries, or into the educational system create more jobs and income. Subsidizing education does not directly line the pockets of the wealthy, so they oppose it. Builing a stadium with tax dollars for the second wealthies man in the world (in Seattle) gets a lot of elite support. I contribute too many missives to pen-l and I'm no expert on urban development. What do others on pen-l think? Should LA subsidize an NFL team to locate here? Is it a good idea for other cities to do so? Does it promote the _type_ of development we want? Should the poor hook their fortunes to Al Davis and the NFL?
