Wood-faced indignation, well timed compassion and unbearable profundity may be, 
depending on the context, more acceptable demeanours than lightness of being 
and gallows humour, but I wonder if such judgements regarding what is and is 
not appropriate have as much to do with strategy as they have with policing 
one's cohort for insufficiently committed and humourless elements. At least 
that seems to be the case judging by the astonishing success of the strategy of 
being really angry about stuff whilst knowing the keys to real social science. 
That's worked wonders so far. Come to think of it, there is some sort of 
private language mistake in the concept of strategy doing the rounds these 
days... 

I am sorry if that is a bit over the top, but I just had an awful couple of 
days dealing with very serious people at the anti-WTO protests here in Sydney.
