I fail to see the material basis of the "fatal antagonism." Certainly culture and attitudes of the peasantry are an issue, but how is the peasant any different from the worker who owns some modest stock of tools, or a personal residence? They are all at the mercy of the taxing authority, the 'usurer,' etc.

Apparently the French peasantry was hostile to the Paris Commune and were the most reliable counter-revolutionary soldiers.

Nor is it clear why nationalization of small holdings would
be a great priority under socialism.  Inadequate food
production capacity does not seem to be a problem under
existing arrangements.
