For a book that remains many years ahead of its time, go look at Pat
Devine's 'Democracy and Economic Planning'. (We've had both Pat and
Robin Hahnel, who are among the best on planning from below, speak in
Venezuela--- see Robin's recent talk in MR.) Also, see a relatively new
work/expose by Moishe Lewin, 'The Soviet Century' (Verso, 2005) drawing
upon the post-89 archives--- tells a lot you suspected but didn't really
want to know.
I'm muddling along on a new MR book, 'The Socialist Alternative:
Real Human Development', which should be out next year. Just finished
the chapter (I think) on 'real socialism' as an organic system.

Hello from a lurker,
I have a student who would like to do a directed study on socialist
alternatives to capitalism. She is particularly interested in centrally
planned rather than market socialism systems. I have not kept up on this
literature, so my list is a few years out of date. Any suggestions anyone
can give would be appreciated.
