What Obama is saying is that employers should obey the contracts they signed, which is hardly radical. Nor is sympathy for the workers in this case. Is he saying that workers all over the country should emulate these guys? I doubt it. 2. To paraphrase Hobbes, it's mere words. Let's see what happens in practice. It's easy to sound sympathetic but difficult to do anything about it in the face of political opposition from people like Volcker and Summers (and the people they represent). 3. The "so-called progressives" are saying that Volcker and Summers indicate that Obama is more of the Clinton same, not more of the Dubya same. (BTW, the emotion that seems to drip from the phrases "so-called progressives" and "deaf ears" fits with my sense that sectarian attitudes infect more than the left of the political spectrum, hitting people toward the middle, too.) 4. I'm sorry about posting this story after others had posted it twice before. -- Jim Devine / "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti." (Go your own way and let people talk.) -- Karl, paraphrasing Dante. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
