Y'know, all these threads are making me wonder if Obama is really
another Dubya! At the core people bought into the beer-drinking-buddy
thing with Dubya because to a large part that *is* him. He is a jovial
fun-loving lad who wants to do good though he doesn't quite clearly
understand what good is, beyond some received notions.
From that bit, a narrative can be developed: he surrounded himself,
in a naive fashion, with men of great expertise, with the intention
(or hope) that these technocrats would, like the scientists on the
Manhattan Project except in the opposite sense, serve his idea of good.
Can Obama, unlike Dubya, pull off a reverse Oppenheimer? Convince boy
geniuses like Summers to solve a problem for its technical sweetness,
even if it, against Summers' instincts, ends up serving mankind? I am
willing to wait and see.
