Both of these observations are quite sensible, and show that 
even a fantastically successful President -- successful, that is, 
in terms of his own agenda -- doesn't win 'em all. 

I wasn't invited to any of the meetings where these matters 
were decided, so I can only speculate what may or may not have 
happened. My speculations, for what they're worth, are that 
even the most wild-eyed Likudnik war hawks couldn't make much 
of a case for taking on Iran while Iraq was still on the boil; 
and that older folks -- a very potent political force -- 
took too much of an interest in Social Security.
