David B. Shemano explained a possible increase in the prevalence of
earthquakes as being > Obviously [due to] the advancement of financial
capitalism and the deepening immiseration of the working class.<

It's more likely a matter of Mother Nature striking back: those
East-Coast elitist NPR-listening and quiche-eating tax-and-spend
liberals have messed with the Invisible Hand, restricting Its
bountiful benevolence -- so It's slapping us back. The Japanese are
being punished for their statist version of capitalism.

Thanks to JMP for providing a serious answer. As others pointed out,
the problems created by earthquakes and tsunamis (which like have
_not_ been getting worse except perhaps at the edges) have gotten
worse due to crowding of populations and _seem_ to have gotten worse
due to media coverage.

Of course, it could be part of the prophecy in the film "2012" coming
true: all of the crust of the Earth is shifting a significant distance
in order to create exciting movie scenes and jobs for unemployed
actors.
