There is a paper by CA Bayly who argues that Acemoglu, et al do not
understand how the hybrid nature of some the institutions in the colonial
period actually prepared the way for growth in the twentieth century. I am
sure that Amiya Kumar Bagchi and others would contest Bayly's description
of the hybrid and capability-enhancing capacities of some colonial
institutions. Just reading Bayly's paper now.
