Thanks for the reference. The link below is to an old dissertation which shows that Marshell's entire economic theory is "dependent upon a deus ex machina, the entrepreneur" (p. 194). I think this study is consistent with, and offers much of the background for, Obrinsky's observation on pages 55-56 regarding the problem interpreting Marshall's statement: "business undertakers are to a certain extent a class apart." http://www2.potsdam.edu/nuwermj/nabers/index.html This dissertation is still useful given the interest in some circles for the work of George Richardson and Brian Loasby, who seek to resurrect the "Book iv Marshall" (i.e. Marshall's evolutionary views).
