Gar: I agree. But in terms of influencing public opinion and official
opinion in the UK, it would be a really good idea to remind them what kind
of precedent they are setting.

Gene is right in principle. Gar is wrong in both practice and principle.
"Reminding" the U.K. government would have an impact only if the media would
spread that reminder. But the media will ignore it. It is an exercise in
futility.
The problem with Gene's suggestion, which would work if it could be
implemented, is that this is a leap year and we are in the midst of a
presidential campaign. For that reason there is no possibility of
mobilizing the numbers which would be required for the tactic to be of any
substance.
For the present leftists simply have to face the fact that all political
activity ceases during presidential electoral campaigns. Give your thought
to ways in which next year we migh again begin to build "a left" in the U.S.
