It's pretty clear who Sam Webb and others who use the generic term "the left" 
are referring to - liberal Democrats, social democrats, CP'ers, Trotskyists, 
Maoists, anarchists, and all those who, whatever their differences, commonly 
support the struggles, the gains, and the institutions of workers, national 
minorities, women, gays, environmentalists, civil libertarians, etc. against 
those who oppose those struggles, would rollback those gains, and destroy those 
organizations if they could.
