I really appreciate conversations about the term "financialization" because the term is meaningless. Show me 3 papers on financialization and I can find you five definitions (at least). Defining it by the FIRE sector's share of GDP is probably the most coherent way but notably this gets short shrift in discussions of financialization. Certainly a shift to empirically defining FIRE is not the dominant trend created by using this term.
