As I understand it, P's theory of social roles is that, at least for
persistent ones, each of them is functional (serving some greater purpose
for society). For a classic criticism of his functionalism, see
Stinchcombe, Arthur. 1968. *Constructing Social Theories*. Chicago:
University of Chicago  Press.
