Depends on the college, I suppose. Duke, I gather, is like spending four years at Trimalchio's country place. But I'm surprised to find such a profound misunderstanding of how analogy works. A/B = C/D does not imply A = C. > I don't understand this strain of anti-intellectualism on this list. > complaining about how learning Greek is useless in modern society Of course it's useless. What possible use could it be? That's not to say it isn't delightful. I spent a lot of time learning what little Greek I know and I'm very glad I did, though it didn't contribute to my 'social mobility' at all. Or my social graces; I'm always trotting out some tired Homeric tag at the worst possible moment. I think what you're calling anti-intellectualism is in fact something quite different, namely a critique of the actually existing credential industry and particularly of its hollow pretensions to reduce inequality. > Following the logic of your complaints against education, > every modern institution is corrupted by capitalism, so > Resistance is Futile. You're making me feel like hard-hearted Ricky Ricardo (not to be confused with his distinguished ancestor David). _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
