Depends on the college, I suppose. Duke, I gather, is like 
spending four years at Trimalchio's country place. But I'm 
surprised to find such a profound misunderstanding of how 
analogy works. A/B = C/D does not imply A = C.

Of course it's useless. What possible use could it be? That's 
not to say it isn't delightful. I spent a lot of time learning 
what little Greek I know and I'm very glad I did, though it 
didn't contribute to my 'social mobility' at all. Or my social 
graces; I'm always trotting out some tired Homeric tag at 
the worst possible moment. 

I think what you're calling anti-intellectualism is in 
fact something quite different, namely a critique of the 
actually existing credential industry and particularly of 
its hollow pretensions to reduce inequality.

Now this sort of thing is just silly. It's like something 
out of I Love Lucy. You're making me feel like hard-hearted 
Ricky Ricardo (not to be confused with his distinguished
