The over-riding theme of the recent HM conference was the necessity to achieve "reform" through building a strong resistance movement _outside_ the confines of law. Had the men and women who built the CIO confined themselves to legal action the CIO would never have been built. Eventually (as Bruce Dixon has powerfully argued) 'the' left must reach masses of people through elections -- but _first_ that "Left" must come into existence. Electoral activity at this time is utterly destructive. (For starters, see Stanley Aronowitz, The Death and Life of American Labor: Toward a New Workers' Movement). His ego may get in the way, but his perspective is fundamental for present politics.) Leftists become leftists when and only when they break out of the Troika: DP plus NAACP plust NLRB).

I can't speak for 'the Trots', of course, but I for one disavow any faintest hint of bitterness. One might as well be bitter about a stretch of dreary damp weather. Of course one *does* get tired of it -- and especially tired of hearing people talk about it. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
