I don't know Axelrod personally, I can't say with confidence what his motivations are. But: 1) he worked for Harold Washington in 1987; for sure he has relationships with people who are all in for Sanders right now; 2) a lot of Democrats are very pissed off right now, not just Sanders supporters, at Clinton's attack on Sanders over single payer health insurance, because they see this as essentially a right-wing attack against universal health insurance that she is cynically deploying to the detriment of future Democratic efforts to ensure universal coverage. So, for example, there are a bunch of House Democrats who have long been co-sponsors of Conyers' single payer bill, who are currently signed up as Hillary endorsers. Behind closed doors, those people are now screaming and pounding the table. Axelrod is a free agent right now so he can go on TV and say things that other people are saying in private.
