Protective tariffs can be damaging to an economy. Look at the solar tariffs which have made it difficult for independent solar installers to make a profit.
The US has higher defense expenses than other countries, so there needs to be some way of balancing the system. The solution seems to be a value-added tax which is present in many countries. The VAT can probably be made progressive. -- Ron
