On the streets of Oakland and Berkeley, Calif, at the evening commute
hour, there was a dramatic decrease in traffic on both commercial
avenues and a main avenue to the commuter freeway. The latter puzzled
me, for I think that the usual traffic on that route is not immigrant
gardeners headed to suburbia. Could it be that commuters stayed home
because their nannys and other day care providers were not available?
One big SUV, parked at a corner, had a hand-written sign on the
back, proclaiming that a nearby restaurant is open, with the
information, in letters just as large, that "the owners are working in
the kitchen.

Immigrants Demonstrate Economic Clout
AP - Immigrants made their point Monday: A lot of work
wouldn't get done without them. As nationwide
demonstrations by immigrants thinned the work force in
businesses from meat-packing plants to construction
sites to behind the counter at McDonald's, economists
said there can be no dispute that immigrants -- including
those who came into the country illegally -- wield
significant clout in the U.S. economy.

Not that these things are related, but it seems that May Day is back
