A quick visual scan of this patch shows a bunch of K7 references sprinkled
amongst K8 files. Does this imply that the athlon event tables, etc. are
embedded in the Opteron stuff?

Haven't seen anything. Unless they share pretty much the same event 
with Opterons but I doubt that.

Jeff may know better because he submitted the patches.
