Well, my suggestion was that all you've really gained for 'b' is "bug 
might be visible".

If you want to clear a mine field, go over the whole area looking for 
(and diffusing) mines using the proper equipment.

If you want to get to the other side, split up and go around.

Wandering through the middle will only tell you (at great cost) where a 
few of the mines are.
