You
need to have your performance data saved as TEXT files. With NT4 you can
use the PDL (Performance Data Logger) tool available in the NT4 Reskit. Be
sure to ONLY use the later release of PDL. (Serious problem with initial PDL
tool). With W2K and XP you have the option to save Perfmon Log
files as text files.
A year or two ago, I put much effort into using perl to automate and parse PerfMon Log files. I would summarize the data and save it into databases for tracking and
charting purposes. Occasionally, not all the detail instances of the PerfMon object was captured, thus
the columns of data would be out of alignment. There's no warning!!!
This really screws thing up!!! (Both
NT4-PDL and W2K PerfmonLogging have this problem). One way to be sure
your data is accurate, is to maintain a count of the header columns and then count the row items in each detail line to ensure all instances been
captured. Detail lines should have the same count of Object/instances
as the header rows. If they don't, the data is out of alignment and needs to be
trashed. It's difficult to interpret a misaligned detail record.
There's other features and adventures as well. Keeps the blood
red.
Enjoy :-)
