In my long decades of designing (hardware) and writing (software) I learned that for me at least, a formal course, even with a lot of supervised exercises, is a waste of time. Eventually I always discovered that it gave me very little when coming to do my first non-trivial project! I had to re-learn all almost from scratch, myself! (That why for me, good documentation is indispensible!) So yes, for me, what you propose is definitely the way to go!
