Well I have been using R for a bit, and I really don't like their site that
much as it is hard to find the things you need. The Octave site is a little
better (used it but switched to Scilab) in that it isn't 30 links that you have
to read to find the one you want - but still not that great for navigation and
getting what you want. SciPy is the best of the bunch for me and this is
similar to what Daniel is trying to do. I has a dashboard, it has a textual
portion and it has a right hand side menu for more detailed navigation. Sure it
needs more tweaking, but the addition of the dashboard is a big help for people
entering the site. Maybe Daniel would allow you to help come up with the site
re-design. I don't believe that the Logos have been chosen, I simply took the
site as the direction of what the layout would look like.

Subject: Re: [Perldl] Website update
Ok, let me throw in some comparable projects' websites:
http://www.r-project.org/
http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/
http://www.scipy.org/
or some other non-scientifc large perl project such as
http://www.catalystframework.org/
None of those are particularly great styles, but they all look professional and
reflect what the user is expecting. I think if you compare them to the current
design, you'll find that
- there are no animated elements on any of the sites. It's distracting, and
rarely useful
- there's little "cutsy" stuff like owls or smileys
- there is a certain consistency in the layout. The current page has too many
pictures in too many different places
Cheers,
Ben
