Here is an example running the proj command with some
input that works for me.  Does it run on your Mac?

$ cat chkp
proj  +proj=eqc  +lon_0=0 -r <<EOF
   45d15'33.1"         111.5W
   45d15.551666667N   -111d30
  +45.25919444444      111d30'000w
EOF

$ . ./chkp
-12412123.22    5038230.48
-12412123.22    5038230.48
-12412123.22    5038230.48
