I rely on cpan to get perl modules. This works fine on 11.04. The system gives me all the libs and headers and I use them to get modules built. This is the 'acceptable' boundary, which results in having an updated Perl baseline, based on a "set it and forget it" system landscape. Just as an example I cannot build both Math::GSL .27 and PDL 2.006 on 12.10 while they are gracefully working on 11.04. Obviously I could hold a 12.10 for a cool desktop use of linux, but it seems to me not viable to be a development replacement, if the upper described scheme is not applicable. I am running it fine, both in a VM as well as on two physical machines. If you use the package manager, everything should install fine. Either software centre or synaptic should work. Let me know where you see having difficulties and I'll try to replicate. Forgetting for a moment that ubuntu as other linux dists are free, if the updates/repos become the preferred way to manage the systems also showing files as perl-modules or new base perl versions (within the major 5.14) as updates, as I see in this 12.10, SO they should be updated at the 'right' speed. As this is obvioulsy IMpossible with perl / cpan the conclusion is that this cannot work. The current 11.04 supplied about all the system packages needed to interface with Perl, and starting that I used cpan to build and update the baseline. Just as I have a software still using SQL2000 (...), there is a reasonable outlook to something similar with my Ubuntu 11.04, that is the latest edible in the landscape.
