Craig,
maybe I'm old fashioned, but I didn't use Alien::Gnuplot up to now
(working with P::G::G 1.5).
During perl Makefile.pl of Alien::Gnuplot you list below, I now found:
E:\temp\Alien-Gnuplot-20131011>perl makefile.pl
Set up gcc environment - gcc.exe (rubenvb-4.5.4) 4.5.4
Couldn't fork! at ./lib/Alien/Gnuplot.pm line 184.
Gnuplot seems to not exist on your system. Shall I try to install it?

I'm on Windows 7 with ActivePerl v5.14.2 built for
MSWin32-x64-multi-thread. I could repeat the tests tomorrow with
Strawberry Perl 5.16.
Naturally, I have no experience with fork()ing on Windows :-), so please
guide me if I could do some debugging for you.

The current devel tree for PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot includes many improvements,
including more robustness (especially under fork() operations), better argument
parsing, and several bug fixes. It also utilizes Alien::Gnuplot to vet and
characterize the external gnuplot command.
After much prodding, PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot is nearing a 2.000 release to go
along with PDL 2.007.
Given the difficulty we've had with smoker testing gnuplot, I am once again soliciting
cross-platform testing from individuals, especially from Microsoft Windows users. If
you're willing, please download the latest from the URL below, "make test", and
let me know what you find. You may have to grab the latest Alien::Gnuplot as well, from
either CPAN or the second URL below.
