Untuk ini perbendaharaan kata kita lebih kaya dari bahasa Inggris nasi = steam rice; nasi goreng = fried rice; nasi spanyol = paella beras = rice; beras selep = polished rice beras sosoh = whole grain rice beras mutiara = pearl rice; beras ketan = glutinous, sweet rice gabah = rice seed, rice grain tanaman padi = paddy plant, rice plant sawah = paddy field padi sawah = lowland rice padi gogo = upland rice Tanaman padi disebut tanaman setahun artinya siklus hidupnya selesai dalam satu tahun (bisa kurang dalam setahun). Khusus untuk tanaman padi, dari biji (benih) sampai tumbuh dewasa, berbunga dan berbuah (gabah itulah buahnya)perlu waktu sekitar 3 bulan. Setelah berbuah lalu mati.
