Thrips are notorious for squeezing into glass-framed objects. They have
evolved morphology and behavior to enable them to wriggle into leaf sheaths
and unopened buds. If plants are unavailable, they will make do with
picture frames, etc. These are almost certainly one of the cereal-feeding
species, which often occur in vast numbers, and travel some distance on
wind currents. They do not pose a threat to the objects. The frass you have
found in the wooden frames will be from a different insect. Tunnels filled
with sawdust-like frass suggest furniture beetles (*Anobium *sp.), and the
silken material cases suggest moth larvae, which would explain the damage
to the embroidery thread.
