Thrips are notorious for squeezing into glass-framed objects. They have evolved
morphology and behavior to enable them to wriggle into leaf sheaths and
unopened buds. If plants are unavailable, they will make do with picture
frames, etc. These are almost certainly one of the cereal-feeding species,
which often occur in vast numbers, and travel some distance on wind currents.
They do not pose a threat to the objects. The frass you have found in the
wooden frames will be from a different insect. Tunnels filled with sawdust-like
frass suggest furniture beetles (Anobium sp.), and the silken material cases
suggest moth larvae, which would explain the damage to the embroidery thread.

Subject: [pestlist] Help identifying tiny little insects found on a collection
object

Hi everyone!
I’m hoping that someone can help me identify these insects that were found on a
framed needlework object. The object had been frozen and when we removed the
frame these insects littered the margin of the image. They were so tiny,
measuring between 1-1.5 mm, that I didn’t realize that they were insects at
first! There is some damage to the embroidery thread and also damage to the
wood of the frame that has tunnels filled with sawdust like frass. I’m not sure
if they would have come out of the wood or the textile since there were larger
beetle cases littering the image of the object also, so beetle larvae could be
responsible for the wood tunneling. Other signs include silken material casings.

Any thoughts would be so helpful!

Best wishes,
Abbie
