Hi Claire,

You are right to look for the source of the infestation. Since they are
somewhat ubiquitous, I suggest that you follow recommendations on the Museum
Pest Network site. https://museumpests.net/

  1. Learn about the pest – what is its life cycle, preferred foods etc.
(another words, why might it be there)
     * Your actions will be based on your knowledge of the insect’s behavior
and preferences
  2. Locate source (if there is one).
  3. Isolate affected objects (or things) if you find them (that will buy you
some time in determining treatment)
     * Use treatment options that are practical : thermal (freeze or heat),
anoxic, etc
     * Treatment is determined. In part, by what objects are being infested
     * please try to avoid the use of pesticide if possible
  4. Improve housekeeping – thoroughly clean all spaces affected. You want to
get rid of all life stages – since it appears that there are adult critters.
  5. Monitor using blunder traps.
  6. Repeat process as soon as you find additional beetles.
All of this information can be found on the Museum Pest Network
https://museumpests.net/

Good luck.
Gretchen

Thanks Matt, sounds like it's confirmed.

Unfortunately no, seems like they are throughout a section of my collections
storage, we're going to try to narrow down the source point today. Does anyone
have suggestions for mitigation? I don't have cold storage onsite and am unsure
about using fumigants. Any suggestions are welcome!

Claire

Hi Claire,

They certainly looks like Black Carpet Beetles to me! All dead?

Best,

Subject: [pestlist] ID help

Hello,

I'm suspicious that these are black carpet beetles, could someone help with the
identification? I have the unfortunate pleasure of having a number of samples
if the photos aren't ideal. All adults are between 3 and 5 mm long.

Thanks for your help!

Claire
