Hi Stephan

Thanks for the quick reply

There are issues which we are having to overcome with respect to a competent
persons/persons being able to review all our procedures and ensure that our
Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) are all correct and the process
is safe

To be honest there is little specific information in the UK on C02
bubbles/tents and with Rentokil being the only UK company we are required to
use their products and technical expertise and experience. We do not have the
complete knowledge in my organisation to sign off these RAMS so we will be
bring in an external consultant

Im on a team working on the Biocides derogation for Nitrogen use which is the
preferred option not least that it is a lot safer, but we have a purpose built
nitrogen chamber on site and post Brexit might be in a position to challenge
the UK regulation

What about your choices of what cannot be frozen?

Ps your English is prefect!

Subject: [PestList] AW: C02 bubbles for Pest Treatment

Hi Adie,

in the past, I worked as professional many years with Nitrogen and CO2 in
flexible tents, chambers, shipping containers or bubbles in Germany and
Austria, but I had never seen a professional portable CO2 chamber in this time.
Just one professional company in Germany (see report 2005) used in the past one
self-made trailer with portable Nitrogen-chamber, till the N2-biocide-disaster
started. I could imagine, that this type of trailer will be tight enough for
CO2.

With CO2-fumigation of shipping containers you could have luck with new
sealings at the doors or bad luck with tiny leaks at the floor or walls. Than
you need a lot of CO2-gas-cylinders over the time.
What about the EU-biocide-registration from Rentokil CO2 Controlled Atmosphere
as insecticide till 31.10.2022. After the Brexit you could use CO2 without this
problem I think.

The handling of CO2 with leaks is quite more dangerous than Nitrogen, if you
use it in big bubbles or close rooms. And you have to ensure, that the moisture
inside the chamber should not be higher than 60%, because of risks with
carbon-acid on materials/pigments.
Otherwise CO2 is still effective against all stages of insects like Nitrogen.

Regards and always sorry for my English
Stephan

Betreff: [PestList] C02 bubbles for Pest Treatment

Morning pesty people from another cold and soggy Britain.

I wanted to share a few questions and knowledge about treatment selection for
museum objects and anyone who is willing to help us would be recognised in our
documents as a thank you as well as a professional acknowledgement.

  1. Is anyone aware of a situation where a portable C02 chamber has been used
and was available for hire similar to a lorry mounted freezer unit?

We need to use Co2 because we do not have the use of Nitrogen here in the UK
and we are exploring options for a bubble in a museum store but preferably
outside for H&S reasons. Unfortunately, the C02 company here do not have lorry
mounted chambers.

  1. We are reviewing what we consider to treat by C02 because freezing is not
considered safe and would be happy to share our lists for comment and use
examples which support our decision making. In particular we are reviewing the
safe to freeze lists and any additional precautions we need to make for
specific object types

I know all of us have a must not freeze lists, but the more I investigate, the
more variety I find
regards
Adie
