Hi Group, We've been fighting a wc moth population at the NGC in Ottawa since Oct 2019, and so far we've used a combination of lured traps and insecticidal treatments in target areas, and I can attest to the mixed success of using lures alone. The use of pheromone lures has been critical for our monitoring efforts, to be sure. But as a standalone strategy it hasn't been very effective at diminishing the population significantly, so I share Adam's skepticism.
I am very curious to see how this trial pans out, Trichogrammas is something we've looked into for our own situation, and I'm thrilled to see this topic make headlines! Keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed for a successful outcome. Thanks for sharing the article, a good read! I am skeptical however of the other strategy they mention in using pheromone as an effective means of interrupting reproduction by confusing the males. The article was spotlighting a situation in England. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a more mainstream IPM tool in the US down the road if success/safety can be proven from their use in other areas of the world. My understanding is the wasp variety that has been scientifically proven to target webbing clothes moths is currently not allowed in the US. Hypothetically, if it is a safe/effective/successful moth treatment, who is going to lead the charge to "legalize" that specific wasp variety? Would this kind of thing be up to museum staff/IPM contractors to contact politicians or the FDA?- I would have no idea where to start with that. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/17/world/europe/blickling-hall-wasps-moths.html<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2021%2F02%2F17%2Fworld%2Feurope%2Fblickling-hall-wasps-moths.html&data=04%7C01%7Csmiles%40gallery.ca%7Cd97ec2ec1d9d49cea34608d8d387850f%7C8eb07b377bfc44febb049721cdf49054%7C0%7C0%7C637491926292404916%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=5vllXORKXgA1NNDzF92ub5JWi5tKt%2BTS6r4SL7mfHs8%3D&reserved=0> -Todd -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MuseumPests" group.
